Church of Christ at Colonial Heights

What worship?

Their worship was something to participate in, not something to watch. On the first day of the week, for instance, they would eat the Lord's supper and hear preaching.

Acts 20:7 "Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight."

They would share their mutual responsibilities by sharing their prosperity, and we find contributions being collected on the first day of the week as well.

I Corinthians 16:1-2 "Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also: On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come."

No percentage or limit was placed upon their giving. They were only told "as he may prosper". The concept of tithes, oaths, pledges or "love offerings" is foreign to the New Testament law.

There were no organizations or institutions gathering their support or support from other congregations. They gathered their money locally, decided locally how to spend the money according to the guidance from the Lord, and locally carried out the distribution of that money for that purpose.

They gave as the purposed in their heart to give. For this reason, we follow their example in not asking for money from visitors.

II Corinthians 9:6-7 "But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver."

In their assemblies they would all sing.

Ephesians 5:19 "speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,"

In all this they were all necessarily involved, for each person was a priest, just as all Christians today are priests.

I Peter 2:4-5 "Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ."

Nobody performed service or worship for any other.

Now that we see some of what worship is acceptable to God, what kind of life do those who are Christians need to lead?
